The Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 is a fourth generation, highly agile multi-role combat aircraft. With full HOTAS (Hands-On Throttle And Stick) controls, Helmet Equipment Assembly (HEA) with the advanced cockpit developed in the BAe EAP aircraft, the aircraft is very modern and is operated by the RAF and other air forces. It can be deployed on the full spectrum of modern air operations, from high-intensity conflict, peacekeeping, counter-revolutionary warfare support operations, ground attack and reconnaissance, to interdiction / Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) in the air policing role. Typhoons have operated in support of NATO peacekeeping and stabilisation missions in the Baltic and Black Sea areas.

The RAF operates several squadrons of Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, from which bases the QRA (North) and QRA (South) missions are flown.
