PZ865 was built at the Hawker factory at Langley near Slough. She was the last of 14,533 Hurricanes built at Langley and was immediately bought back from Air Ministry by Hawker Aircraft, and given the honorific title 'The Last of the Many'. PZ865 was re-registered as a civilian test aircraft with the registration G-AMAU, and painted in Hawker's blue colour scheme. She was used as a chase plane in the development of the Hawker Harrier, and was also raced competitively, achieving a second place in the 1950 King's Cup race. She also featured in the famous film ' The Battle of Britain'. PZ865 was repainted in her wartime camouflage scheme and was once again known as PZ865.

in 1972, the then Hawker Siddeley company extensively restored PZ865 and presented her to the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. In 2010 she was rebuilt and repainted as MkIIc HW840 with code EG-S of 34 Sqn, South East Asia Command. This was the personal aircraft of Flt Lt Jimmy Whalen DFC. The standard red / white / blue roundels were replaced with blue / white roundels to prevent confusion with the red centre of the Japanese markings.

There are only a handful of Hurricanes in airworthy condition around the World; the BBMF has two MkIIcs, PZ865 and LF363.
